Myth vs. Science: All Vitamin Forms Are Created Equal

Here’s a simple guide to decoding what your supplement label is really telling you:

Natural vs. Synthetic Vitamins: Exactly as it sounds – natural vitamins pre-exist in food sources while synthetic vitamins are man-made in a lab (Behringer et al., 2025). While whole foods should always be the foundation of good nutrition, some synthetic forms are actually more stable and more readily absorbed than their naturally occurring counterparts. Think of them as receiving a VIP pass through your body’s absorption process.

For example, folate is found naturally in a variety of leafy green vegetables and is an important vitamin for pregnancy and fetal development (Milman, 2012; NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2022). However, research has shown that natural folate can be more easily destroyed by cooking and processing (Milman, 2012). Its synthetic form, folic acid, is much more stable and is the more common form of folate found in fortified foods and supplements (Milman, 2012; NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2022).

Active vs. Inactive Compounds: Think of vitamins like employees. Some arrive ready to start work immediately, while others need additional training before they can contribute. Inactive vitamins must undergo an enzymatic reaction or conversion in order to be utilized by the body, while active forms are immediately ready to power your cells (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2025). Vitamin D is a great example. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) and ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) are inactive forms obtained through sunlight and food. Before they can carry out many of their important functions, your body converts them into the active form, calcitriol (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2025; Sugandhi et al., 2023).
